Thesis resume
Those who are familiar with Catherine Pozzi have often read her poems, have sometimes perused her Journal or have encountered her in biographies on Paul Valéry, of whom she was both a work partner and a mistress. While Catherine Pozzi remains an acclaimed poet, her major work remains vastly unexplored. Le Livre, as the author calls it in her Journal, which originated in 1915 under the title of De Libertate and which was partially posthumously published in 1935 as Peau dÂme, is widely disregarded by the Pozzian publishing and critical fields. I have written this book for everyone, knowing that no one would read it. This explains both its tone and its topic, as the author puts it in her preface to Peau dÂme, which is now out of print. What publishing and biographical elements may have led to the overlooking of this peculiar literary object to which Catherine Pozzi had however devoted twenty years of her brief life? What did Le Livre deal with? What is Le Livre? Does it only span over the works that it comprises? Did the prevailing intertwining of poetic, scientific, philosophic and religious speech that it weaves trigger its dire literary fate which the author had foreshadowed? This analysis provides answers for these questions so as to highlight the authors ambitious attempt by examining the unpublished and freshly transcribed De Libertate as well as by investigating the knowledge which it carries out. Considered through the prism of a rejuvenated De Libertate, which should have been the sequel to Peau dÂme, the scrutiny of the Pozzian system seems to shed a new light on the complete works of an unfairly overlooked author.
